How we work, what we cover and what to expect from an engagement - for boards, founders, investors and senior executives.
This page answers the questions boards, founders, investors and senior executives most often ask Vanguard Search Partners about retained executive search in renewable energy: what we do, which appointments and markets we cover, how an engagement runs, how we protect confidentiality, and where to find our research.
Vanguard Search Partners is a partner-led, retained executive search firm for renewable energy and energy infrastructure. For developers, IPPs and emerging platforms, we cover the full platform - from development and origination through engineering, construction, finance, commercial, legal and asset management, up to the C-suite. For investors, we appoint professionals from Analyst to Partner level and lead C-suite searches for their energy portfolio companies. A partner runs each engagement from brief to offer. More about the firm.
A retained search is a dedicated mandate run by a partner, not a race to submit CVs. Organisations searching for renewable energy recruiters often need something different: we map the whole market, including leaders who are not actively looking, and screen each candidate rigorously against the brief. You receive a calibrated shortlist rather than a volume of CVs, and the search is handled with discretion throughout.
For developers, IPPs and emerging platforms, we search across the full platform: development, origination, engineering, construction, finance, commercial, legal and asset management, up to the C-suite. Typical appointments include CEO, CFO, COO, CCO, Head of Development, Head of Origination, Head of Project Finance, Financial Controller, Head of Accounting & Tax, Director of Construction and Commercial Project Manager. For investors, we appoint from Analyst to Partner level. How we work with clients.
We cover US renewable energy and energy infrastructure, with an active practice in Germany. That spans distributed generation, community solar, C&I and utility-scale solar, energy storage, wind, fuel cells and onsite power, data centre power, and power grids and interconnection. See the sectors we cover.
We work with the businesses that build and own renewable energy assets, and with the capital behind them. Clients include developers, IPPs and emerging platforms, alongside the private equity, private credit, venture capital, infrastructure funds and asset managers that back them. For investors, we appoint professionals from Analyst to Partner level and lead C-suite searches for their energy portfolio companies.
We typically present a calibrated shortlist within 21 days. The time to an accepted offer then depends on the seniority of the role, the depth of the market and the preferred candidate's notice period. We agree a realistic timetable when we take the brief, so expectations are clear from the start.
Every engagement follows the same disciplined sequence, led by a partner. It begins with the brief and calibration, then moves through market mapping, a discreet approach to the right people, in-depth assessment and a calibrated shortlist. We then manage interviews and the offer, and support onboarding once the appointment is made. See how an engagement runs.
Yes. Confidentiality is built into every engagement, from the first approach to the final offer. We never name the client of a live search, and candidates learn the identity of the business only when it is appropriate. That discretion matters most on sensitive appointments, including those where an incumbent is still in role.
Our track record is measured on outcomes. These are the figures we report:
Yes, in Germany. Alongside our US practice, we advise German renewable energy businesses and their investors on appointments across the same scope as in the US. The engagement model, the standard of assessment and the discretion we apply are the same in both markets, and a partner leads each search personally.
Start with a conversation with a partner. Tell us about the role and the business through our Discuss a Search page, and we will arrange a call to cover the brief, the market as we see it and a realistic approach. There is no obligation either way.
We approach senior executives on behalf of clients with a specific mandate, and we are always open to a confidential conversation. When we contact you, it is because your experience fits a live brief. If you are considering a move, a call with a partner gives you a candid read on the market and where your record is most valued. Our approach to executives.
No. Our clients retain us to run their searches, so there is never a fee for an executive we speak with or represent. Our role is to present each opportunity accurately and to advise you honestly on whether it fits what you want from your next appointment.
Yes. What you share with us stays between you and the partner you speak with. We never put your name forward to a client without your explicit agreement, and we do not share your details with your current employer. Discretion matters as much on the executive side of a search as it does to our clients.
Our current mandates are listed on the Jobs page. Many senior searches are confidential and never advertised, so the list is only part of the picture. If your experience fits our markets, contact us and a partner will follow up.

Our 2026 Talent Retention Intelligence Report examines exactly that, built on proprietary data from 2,756 professionals. Among its findings, 45% of leavers say their exit was preventable. The report ranks the eight retention drivers that decide whether people stay, and explains why falling turnover is masking rising intent to leave.
